Sambalpur: A new ragging complaint has emerged from Burla’s Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR). A first-year postgraduate (PG) medical student has accused a second-year student of threatening him with a knife inside the hostel canteen.
Attack Attempt in Hostel Canteen
According to the complaint, the incident occurred when the junior student went to the canteen of Hostel No. 7 around 8 PM to have dinner. There, a senior PG student confronted him, asking, “Why have you come here?” The senior allegedly abused him and tried to attack him with a knife.
However, the junior student managed to run away and narrowly escaped harm. Other students who were present at the spot immediately intervened and restrained the accused senior.

Complaint Filed, Anti-Ragging Meeting Held
Following the incident, the victim filed a complaint with the Anti-Ragging Cell of Vimsar. In response, the cell conducted a meeting today under the chairmanship of the Vimsar Dean.
Victim’s Father Raises Serious Allegations
The victim’s father made strong allegations after the meeting. He claimed that the institute is trying to blame his son instead of taking action against the attacker. He pointed out that the accused senior was not even called to the meeting, but officials questioned his son instead asking, “Why did you go there to eat?”
The father further questioned the fairness of the institution, saying that this same senior had ragged his son previously as well. Earlier, they had ignored the issue, hoping it would not recur. But now, after the senior threatened his son with a knife, they decided to speak out.
Institute Yet to Respond
Professor Dr. Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, the Dean of Vimsar, has not responded to attempts to contact him for comments on this matter.
