Sambalpur: Journalist’s Effort Leads to Stolen Bike Recovery; Police Remained Inactive as Stolen Bike Moves Freely

Sambalpur: The inefficiency of Sambalpur police has once again been exposed as a journalist successfully recovered his stolen bike while the police failed to act.

Bike Stolen in Broad Daylight

On November 29, 2024, journalist Badal Sendriya’s bike was stolen from a busy street in Sambalpur, even though CCTV cameras recorded the incident. Despite filing an immediate complaint at Dhanupali police station, the police failed to trace the thief for over two months.

Journalist Tracks Down His Own Bike

After waiting for over two months, on February 12, the journalist spotted two young men riding a bike near the District Collector’s office. The bike looked familiar, so he followed them. While pursuing them, he informed fellow journalists and Dhanupali police officers over the phone. Near the SP’s office, the journalist confronted the young men and engaged them in conversation while waiting for support. Soon, other journalists arrived at the scene and helped detain the suspects.

Police Finally Take Action

Upon arrival, the police detained the two youths and took the stolen bike to Dhanupali police station. Investigation revealed that the actual thief had mortgaged the bike to them for Rs. 6,000 before fleeing. The primary suspect, a resident of Bhatli in Bargarh, was already wanted in other cases.

Police Inaction Raises Concerns

For two months, the stolen bike moved freely around the city, even near police stations and high-security areas, without being noticed. Despite installing CCTV cameras and security cabins, the police failed to prevent crimes. This incident highlights the rising crime rate and the urgent need for effective policing in Sambalpur.
