Sambalpur: Sambalpur city is witnessing frequent accidents. Although heavy vehicles are prohibited during the daytime, traffic rules are not being strictly enforced. Reckless bike riders and drivers continue to speed without any restrictions.

Underage Drivers Violate Traffic Rules

Many underage students from private schools ride vehicles home. Not just students, but several minors in the city drive at high speed, violating the Motor Vehicle Act 1999. Despite these violations, the traffic police and regional transport department have remained inactive.

Strict Laws Exist, but No Action is Taken

According to the law, if a person below 18 is caught driving, strict action must be taken. The vehicle should be seized, and a fine of Rs. 25,000 should be imposed. The vehicle’s registration should be canceled, and the owner or parents of the minor should face legal charges. In some cases, there is even a provision for three years of imprisonment.

Additionally, if caught, their details must be uploaded to the Sarthi Portal, and they will not be eligible for a driving license until they turn 25. However, in Sambalpur, many underage students drive around the city, often with three people on a single bike. Reckless driving has led to several accidents, causing injuries and fatalities.

Parents Are Irresponsible

Despite the risks, many parents continue to allow their children to drive. This has become a growing concern, as minors travel not just to school but also around the city at all times. People are now demanding stricter vehicle checks.

CCTV Installed, Yet No Action Taken

The city has CCTV cameras at major junctions. However, authorities take no action against underage or reckless drivers. The police and transport department have failed to conduct proper vehicle checks, putting pedestrians at risk.

Police Promise Stricter Checks

Traffic Police Officer Devendra Nayak stated that stricter checks have now begun. If underage drivers are caught, strict action will be taken against them.
