Redevelopment of Sambalpur Railway Station Underway
Sambalpur: The Sambalpur railway station is undergoing redevelopment to meet world-class standards. The redevelopment aims to increase passenger and train capacity in the future. However, despite these plans, the lack of sufficient parking spaces has become a significant concern for passengers. The railway authorities have not yet addressed the issue, raising fears of increased inconvenience for travelers.
Current Parking Issues
Sambalpur railway station serves as a crucial hub for the entire western Odisha region, providing connectivity to various parts of the country. Unfortunately, passengers arriving at the station in their two-wheelers or four-wheelers struggle to find adequate parking spaces. Previously, parking facilities for vehicles were provided during earlier redevelopment phases. However, with the opening of a new restaurant in the parking area, the available space has significantly reduced, causing major inconvenience.
Passenger Complaints and Frustration
The lack of sufficient parking has resulted in passengers being turned away, unable to park their vehicles. This situation has led to widespread dissatisfaction among travelers. Sambalpur residents and commuters have long demanded proper parking facilities outside the station, but their concerns remain unaddressed.

Legal Dispute Over Parking Management
A recent legal battle involving the station’s parking contractor and the district’s dispute resolution council has brought attention to the issue. Passengers argue that providing adequate parking is a primary responsibility of the railway authorities. They emphasize that it is essential to ensure a seamless experience for travelers and their families.
Authorities’ Promises
According to a railway official, who preferred to remain anonymous, the ongoing redevelopment project will include plans for additional parking spaces. However, until this materializes, passengers will continue to face challenges.
Citizens Demand Immediate Action
Debashish Purohit, a member of Sambalpur Vikas Manch, highlighted the urgent need for adequate parking outside the station. He criticized the neglect of this issue over the years, resulting in the parking problem becoming more severe. Furthermore, the allocation of parking space for restaurants, which do not attract significant crowds, has worsened the situation.
Recommendations for Improvement
Citizens suggest relocating the restaurant to another area and utilizing the freed space for vehicle parking. Immediate action is necessary to ensure passengers can park their vehicles conveniently, thereby improving their travel experience.
By addressing this growing problem, the railway department can enhance passenger satisfaction and support Sambalpur’s development as a modern transportation hub.
