Sambalpur: Water Kiosk System Becomes a Mockery in Sambalpur; Pedestrians Not Getting Drinking Water

Soaring Temperatures, No Water for Pedestrians

Sambalpur: Since February, the temperature in Sambalpur has been rising steadily. However, pedestrians are struggling to find drinking water as the city’s water kiosks (Jalachhatra) remain closed. With each passing day, the mercury continues to climb, making the heat unbearable. Unfortunately, there are no visible signs of water kiosks opening soon.

Thousands of people visit Sambalpur daily for work and other purposes. However, due to the absence of functional water kiosks, they are forced to buy bottled water. Concerned citizens are demanding immediate arrangements to provide drinking water, especially in busy areas.

No Drinking Water Facilities in Key Locations

Several crowded areas, including Ainthapali, Budharaja, Laxmi Talkies, Kacheri Chowk, Dhanupali, and the SP Office, lack proper drinking water facilities. As a result, pedestrians and commuters face severe difficulties in quenching their thirst. While the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) is focusing on various developmental projects, it has failed to maintain previously built drinking water facilities. Many of these projects are now in a non-functional state, further worsening the situation.

Public Demand for Immediate Action

Residents of the city have expressed their frustration. Nayana Jena, a local resident, stated, “As the heat increases, it feels suffocating outside. We need access to drinking water, but the authorities are ignoring pedestrians’ needs and delaying action. If water kiosks are set up soon, it will benefit everyone.”

Ajit Mishra, a tourist, also voiced his concerns: “With such extreme heat, opening water kiosks is essential. It will help visitors like us who struggle to find drinking water.”

SMC Assures Water Kiosks from April 1

The issue was brought to the attention of SMC Commissioner Vedbhushan. In response, he announced that water kiosks would start functioning from April 1. Major intersections in the city will have these kiosks installed. However, the work will begin only after the arrival of necessary materials.
