20 Dead After Consuming Poisoned Liquor in Punjab
Tragedy struck in Punjab’s Sangrur district as 20 people aged 25 to 70 lost their lives after consuming spurious liquor, also known as hooch. The death toll has risen to 20, with 11 fatalities reported in Gujjara, Upali, and Dandoli, while 9 deaths occurred in Sunam. Authorities have formed a high-level committee to investigate the incident.
A special investigation team (SIT) consisting of four members, including DIG Patiala Range Harcharan Bhullar IPS, SSP Sangrur Sartaj Chahal IPS, and retired Additional Commissioner (Excise) Naresh Dubey, led by ADGP Law & Order Gurinder Dhillon IPS, will conduct the probe.
Dr. Kirpal Singh, the civil surgeon of Sangrur, reported that 40 patients have been admitted since Wednesday, with 20 fatalities. Among the remaining patients, 11 have been transferred to Jalandhar Hospital in Patiala, while six are receiving treatment at the civil hospital in Sangrur. Unfortunately, three patients left without medical consultation.
In recent developments, the death toll rose further more fatalities were reported on Friday, March 23 bringing the total to 21. Authorities disclosed that two additional individuals have been apprehended by the police. This brings the total number of arrests in connection with the case to six.
