Sambalpur: 70,000 Patients Treated for Just One Rupee; The Incredible Work of Dr. Shankar Ramchandani

Sambalpur: In 2021, Dr. Shankar Ramchandani, an Assistant Professor in Vimsar’s Medicine Department, founded the “One-Rupee Clinic” with the goal of making healthcare more accessible to the poor. His vision arose from the recognition that many impoverished patients avoid seeking medical care due to high consultation fees. Since then, over 70,000 patients have been treated at his clinic for a mere one rupee.

Bringing Healthcare to the Needy

Dr. Ramchandani’s clinic has gained popularity not only in Odisha but also in neighboring states like Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Poor patients from these areas have traveled long distances to access the clinic’s low-cost, high-quality healthcare services. This clinic for one rupee has helped Dr. Ramchandani build a unique identity nationwide, and his selfless work continues to inspire many.

Free Medicines and Medical Services

In addition to consultations, the clinic provides patients with free medications, ECGs, and nebulizer services. Dr. Ramchandani’s generosity does not stop there. He even transports those who are unable to reach the clinic on their own in his personal car.

The Legacy of Compassion

The clinic was dedicated on January 12, 2021, by Dr. Ramchandani’s late mother, Lajwanti Ramchandani. She is no longer with us, but her legacy lives on in the clinic, where 70,000 patients have already benefited. Dr. Ramchandani believes his mother would be proud of the clinic’s impact.

A Commitment to Continue

Dr. Ramchandani has pledged to continue providing this service and even expand the range of free services based on his abilities. His commitment to serving the poor ensures that many more patients continue to receive the care they require at a low cost.

Dr. Ramchandani’s work with the One-Rupee Clinic exemplifies the power of compassion and the importance of universal access to healthcare.
