Sambalpur: A liquor shop was robbed on Friday night and an encounter took place on the outskirts of Sambalpur city on Saturday evening. There was an exchange of shots between Sambalpur police and inter-district dacoits near Kenghati. The police officers were narrowly missed in the exchange of shots by the dacoits. However, Jacob, a vicious criminal in the Koraput district, was seriously injured in police firing. While the police managed to catch 12 robbers, the police seized 3 lakh 20 thousand rupees in cash, 2 country guns, 2 bhujali, 4 big knives, 2 iron rods, etc. from them.
SP Mukesh Kumar Bhamu said in a press conference held at the district police headquarters at 9:00 p.m. that a robbery took place from a foreign liquor shop in Jayantpur under Sadar police station on Friday late night. In a group, 12 to 13 miscreants broke into the liquor shop. They robbed the salesman with 3 lakh 20 thousand rupees at Bhujali and gunpoint. On receiving the information, the Sambalpur police immediately formed a special team and raided various places. The Sambalpur Police launched a campaign to maintain harmony with the railway police. When the miscreants planned to board the train, it was foiled due to the activeness of the Railway Police. Seeing the hasty action taken by the police, the miscreants separated and did not come together to put dust in the eyes of the police. However, the Sambalpur police raided several places and interrogated several miscreants. Information was received from reliable sources that some crooks were hiding near the Kenghati Ice Factory. On seeing the police, the miscreants fired shots. The police also retaliated by firing shots. Yakub (23) of Koraput Lakshmipur was shot in the right leg by the police. Yakub has been admitted to Burla Hospital for treatment. It is said that 3 rounds were fired from both sides. Muhammad Aftab Alam, the salesman of the liquor store, filed a written complaint at the Sadar police station in connection with the robbery incident.
