Major Step to Curb Cyber Crime: Documents of 20 Lakh Mobile Numbers to be Verified
A big attempt is under underway to fight the country’s growing cybercrime problem. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and state police forces from various states have agreed to work together to combat the misuse of telecom services for cybercrime and financial fraud. Through this joint effort, cybercriminals’ networks will be broken down, and people will have protection from increasing online threats.
According to an analysis conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs and state police, 28,200 mobile handsets have been identified as being used to commit cyber crimes, as stated by the Ministry of Telecommunications in a press release. In a secondary investigation done by the Department of Telecommunications, 20 lakh (2 million) mobile numbers were linked to these 28,200 mobile handsets. As a result, it has been decided to re-verify the documents for these 20 lakh mobile numbers.
According to the Ministry of Communications, mobile service providers across the country have been asked to block the detected 28,200 mobile devices and re-verify the documentation of the 20 lakh mobile numbers linked with these mobile handsets.
