Sunil Chhetri Retires from Football; Played His Last International Match Against Kuwait; Exits Kolkata Stadium in Tears
Indian captain Sunil Chhetri has retired from football. The 39-year-old Chhetri played the final international match of his career on Thursday against Kuwait, which ended in a goalless draw.
Chhetri left Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium with folded hands and in tears. Both teams’ players gave him a standing ovation.
This draw has dealt a blow to India’s hopes of reaching the third round of the FIFA qualifiers. Team India will play their next match against Qatar.
Chhetri is India’s top goal scorer in international football, having scored 94 goals in a 19-year career. He is the third-highest goal scorer among active players after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Stadium Echoes with Chants of ‘Chhetri-Chhetri’
Although the Indian captain couldn’t score in his last match, the stadium echoed with chants of “Chhetri-Chhetri.” After the match, players from both India and Kuwait stood and applauded as Chhetri bid farewell.

Nineteen years ago, Sunil Chhetri began his professional football career with Mohun Bagan in 2002. Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium is Mohun Bagan’s home ground.
