Debasnana Purnima, one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated in the holy city of Puri, marks the divine bathing ceremony of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. Significance of Debasnana Purnima
Debasnana Purnima, also known as Snana Yatra, is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, which usually falls in June. This festival holds immense religious significance as it is believed to be the birthday of Lord Jagannath. The deities are taken out in a grand procession from the sanctum sanctorum of the Jagannath Temple to the Snana Mandap, an elevated platform where the bathing ritual takes place.
During the Snana Yatra, the deities are bathed with 108 pitchers of consecrated water drawn from the sacred Suna Kua (Golden Well). This ritual is not only a symbolic act of purification but also a manifestation of the deities’ divine powers and their ability to cleanse the sins of the devotees.
