Sambalpur: The District Collector stated that the jaundice situation in Sambalpur has been under control. This was reiterated by the Chief District Medical Officer and the Additional District Collector during a review meeting. Nonetheless, the situation is getting worse. The number of people infected increases by the day. 7 new cases were identified in the report received by 10 a.m. on Wednesday. With this, the number of jaundice cases has reached the century mark. The most concerning aspect is that the vast majority of those infected are children, many of whom are under the age of 14, posing a new challenge for the health department.
Official Claims vs. Ground Reality
Over the last 10 days, the number of jaundice cases in Sambalpur has increased. The government report stated that the number is 100, but the reality is much higher. The discovery of more than 50 infected individuals outside of the cluster is cause for concern. The district administration is attempting to conceal this information. Previously, infected individuals were found in Kumbharpada, Saliabagicha, Pensionpada, and Dhobapada. Cases are now being identified in other areas. Infected people have been found in Bareipali, Mudipada, and other locations outside the cluster.

Doctor’s Warning of Potential Epidemic
A senior doctor has warned that if immediate action is not taken, this might turn into an epidemic. The district health department is not interested in increasing the number, so no mass testing is being done, and efforts are being made to conceal the data and the number of cases. As the city’s jaundice situation worsens, the district administration takes no visible steps. The authorities do not even have access to the PHC water map in areas where patients are identified. As a result, there is some doubt about the methods used to control jaundice. How many testings are conducted in the city? Aside from the cluster area, what new areas are detecting infected individuals? There are allegations that the district administration is trying to hide all this information.
Health Department’s Monitoring Efforts
The district administration has identified 57 infected individuals from Kumbharpada and Saliabagicha, 14 from Pensionpada, 11 from Dhobapada, and 11 from Kalibadi. The health of all infected people is stable. Independent health department teams are going door-to-door to monitor the situation. Dr. Sujatarani Mishra, Chief District Medical Officer, has admitted that 49 people have been infected outside of Sambalpur’s cluster area. Everything is being monitored. Because no new infected individuals have emerged from those areas, it cannot be considered an epidemic. However, Dr. Mishra stated that the health department is still going door-to-door to assess the situation.
