Parental Responsibility and School Awareness
Parents are frequently unaware of or choose to ignore this issue, occasionally allowing their children to drive to ease their responsibilities. Underage drivers can be seen on busy city streets and national highways, not only on scooters but also on heavier vehicles such as bikes and bullets. These young drivers frequently drive recklessly, talking on their phones, and in some cases, three students ride on a single scooter.
Despite being aware, many schools have not implemented strict measures to prevent students from driving to school. To avoid detection, some students park their vehicles further away from the school. Except for Road Safety Week and sporadic crackdowns, school authorities, traffic police, and the Transport Department have not adequately addressed this issue.
Official Statements and Future Actions
Regional Transport Officer Ramdas Tudu stated that authorities are urging schools to take responsibility and that they will continue the crackdown. On Monday and Tuesday, authorities fined 11 underage drivers ₹25,000 each and referred them to court. Moving forward, authorities will seize vehicles and take legal action against the parents as well.
