Sambalpur: Illegal Soil Theft from Hirakud Dam Site, Causes Revenue Loss for Government

Sambalpur: Unauthorized soil extraction from the Hirakud Dam’s second spillway site has resulted in significant revenue losses for the government. Several contractors removed soil intended for construction without proper Revenue or Mining Department approval.

Soil from a nearby hill was excavated as part of the Hindalco plant’s ongoing expansion. Contractors, seizing the opportunity, have begun transporting soil without an official permit. Approximately 2 lakh cubic meters of soil, worth over ₹15 crore, have already been removed.

This unauthorized activity occurs primarily after 9 p.m., raising concerns about potential police involvement. Environmentalists and concerned citizens are calling for immediate action to end illegal soil trafficking.

When questioned, Sudhar Sahu, the additional chief engineer in charge of the spillway construction, claimed to be unaware of the ongoing soil theft. He promised to conduct an investigation right away.

The unchecked exploitation not only endangers the environment but also causes the government significant financial loss because it collects no revenue for the extracted soil. Authorities must take immediate action to stop these illegal activities and protect the environment and public funds.
