Historic Move: Modi Cabinet Approves ‘One Nation-One Election’ Proposal
Today, the Modi Cabinet approved the proposal for ‘One Nation-One Election’. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this significant decision by the central cabinet. The government intends to introduce a bill on ‘One Nation-One Election’ during the upcoming winter session of Parliament.
Report by Kovind-Led Committee
The proposal is based on a report submitted by a committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind. This report, presented to the cabinet in March, just before the next Lok Sabha elections, advocated for simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies across the country. Furthermore, the report recommended that municipal elections be held within 100 days of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.

Political Support and Opposition
To prepare the ‘One Nation-One Election’ report, the Kovind-led committee consulted with 62 political parties. The proposal received support from 32 parties, including major parties such as the BJP, JD(U), and LJP (R). However, 15 parties opposed the idea, and another 15 chose not to respond.
