Sambalpur: Patient’s Life at Risk Due to Nursing Student’s Saline Error at Vimsar; Saved by Doctor’s Timely Intervention

Impact of the Nursing Officers’ Strike

Sambalpur: The effects of the ongoing nursing officers’ strike are becoming evident at Burla’s Vimsar (Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research). Because of the strike, inexperienced nursing students have been assigned critical duties. Unfortunately, this led to a serious incident today, where a patient’s life was at risk due to improper medical care provided by a nursing student.

Patient in Critical Condition Due to Saline Administration Error

A nursing student’s lack of experience resulted in a serious error while administering saline, endangering a patient’s life. However, the patient was saved due to timely intervention by a doctor. The patient, a 50-year-old female from Bargarh district, was admitted to the female medicine ward at Vimsar on Tuesday after her blood pressure dropped severely. As part of her treatment, a nurse was instructed to mix noradrenaline with saline and slowly administer it via microdrip.

Life-Saving Doctor’s Intervention

The nursing student, unaware of the proper procedure, set the saline to flow faster with a macro-drip rather than a micro-drip. This caused the patient’s blood pressure to skyrocket, putting her life in grave danger. Fortunately, a doctor on the scene noticed the situation and quickly intervened, correcting the error and stabilizing the patient’s condition.

Nursing Students’ Role Under Scrutiny

Doctors at the hospital are concerned that the use of untrained nursing students for critical duties during the strike is resulting in such serious mistakes. They added that if the doctor had not intervened in time, the situation could have turned serious.

This incident highlights the potential risks associated with the ongoing nursing officers’ strike, as well as the critical need for proper medical staffing at Vimsar to ensure patient safety.
