VIMSAR Celebrates PRISMUS 2024

Sambalpur: The postgraduate student union at Burla’s Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) hosted its annual event, PRISMUS 2024, on Friday. Several notable guests attended the program, including Odisha’s Health Minister, Dr. Mukesh Mahaling. He opened the event and discussed pressing issues concerning healthcare infrastructure.

Health Minister’s Commitment to Fill Doctor Vacancies

Dr. Mahaling acknowledged the institute’s and the state’s ongoing shortage of doctors and paramedical staff during his speech. He reaffirmed that efforts are being made to fill these gaps. He stated that many new medical colleges will open across the country in the next five years as a result of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives, creating a large number of doctor positions to serve the public.

Local MLA Expresses Concern Over Brain Drain

Local MLA Jaynarayan Mishra also addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of doctors remaining in the country. He noted that, despite the growing demand for medical professionals, many are choosing to work abroad, which he believes is a concerning trend.

Inspiration for Medical Students

Himanshu Lal, Inspector General of Police, encouraged the students by sharing motivating thoughts. Professor Bhabagrahi Rath, Director of VIMSAR, and Professor Pradeep Mahanty, Dean of the Medical College, both spoke about the importance of medical students in shaping a healthy society. They urged students to take their responsibilities seriously and contribute to society’s well-being.

Call for VIMSAR to be Developed into AIIMS Model

The postgraduate student union urged the Health Minister to ensure that VIMSAR is transformed into an institution modeled after the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), particularly since Sambalpur is set to receive its second AIIMS soon. The students also requested a greater emphasis on infrastructure and facilities to meet the region’s healthcare needs.

Cultural and Educational Support

Student Union President Chiranjitree Sahu welcomed the guests, while General Secretary Sahid Akhtar oversaw the proceedings. Professor Venudhar Pandey and Professor Sharmila Pradhan, the cultural committee advisors, were also present to encourage the students. Senior professors, teachers, and a large number of medical students attended the event. Sahid Akhtar thanked everyone in his concluding remarks.
