Dasami, also known as Vijaya Dashami or Dussehra, is the tenth day of the Navaratri festival and represents the grand finale of the festivities. It is one of the most important and joyous festivals in India, commemorating the triumph of good over evil. People across the country celebrate this day with great enthusiasm and devotion, taking part in a variety of rituals, cultural events, and community gatherings.
Why Do We Celebrate Dasami?
Dasami is celebrated for two main reasons:
- Lord Rama’s Victory Over Ravana: In the epic Ramayana, Lord Rama fought a fierce battle against Ravana, the demon king who kidnapped his wife, Sita. On Dasami, Rama defeated and killed Ravana, symbolizing the victory of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (evil). This story is retold through dramatic performances known as Ramlila, and the day concludes with the burning of effigies of Ravana, Meghnath, and Kumbhakarna to symbolize the defeat of evil.
- Goddess Durga’s Victory Over Mahishasura: In Hindu mythology, Goddess Durga fought the powerful demon Mahishasura, who terrorized the heavens. After nine days of fierce combat, she emerged victorious on the tenth day, restoring peace and balance to the universe.
Significance of Dasami
Dasami is a reminder of the eternal truth that good always triumphs, no matter how powerful evil appears. It teaches us that courage, perseverance, and righteousness can overcome any challenge. The festival encourages us to reject negativity and embrace positivity, love, and kindness.

Celebrations Across India
Effigy Burning and Ramlila: In many parts of North India, the effigies of Ravana, symbolizing evil, are burnt amidst loud cheers and firecrackers. The dramatic performances of Ramlila depict the life and valor of Lord Rama, attracting thousands of spectators.
Durga Idol Immersion: In Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, Dasami marks the immersion of Goddess Durga’s idols in rivers or water bodies, accompanied by devotees singing and dancing with joy. This ritual, known as Visarjan, signifies the Goddess’s return to her heavenly abode.
