Sambalpur: During a search for ganja, the Excise Department seized more than 1.5 quintals of silver ornaments from a car’s secret chamber. Silver worth approximately ₹1.5 crore was confiscated from Rengali in Sambalpur.

Ganja Suspected, Silver Found

The Excise Department intercepted a car suspected of transporting ganja after receiving a tip. Instead of ganja, they discovered a secret compartment containing a large collection of silver ornaments.

Secret Chamber Discovery

The seizure occurred on the Sambalpur-Jharsuguda Biju Expressway. Hidden silver ornaments included anklets, earrings, idols, and silver glasses. These were reportedly smuggled from Maharashtra to Jharkhand.

Excise Department’s Vigilance

Excise officials were on high alert near Rengali Jhuripada, hoping to apprehend ganja smugglers. When the vehicle with registration number MH14H1693 appeared suspicious, they stopped and searched it. During the search, silver ornaments were discovered in a secret compartment within the car.

Large Seizure

Officials determined the total weight of the seized silver to be 165 kg. They took the silver to the GST office, where they officially weighed and recorded it. The GST department detained a car and three smugglers in connection with the case for further investigation.

Smuggling from Maharashtra to Ranchi

Investigators discovered that smugglers were illegally transporting the seized silver from Maharashtra to Ranchi. Tekchand Meher, the GST Deputy Commissioner for Sambalpur, stated that officials will deposit the silver in the Sambalpur treasury after completing all legal procedures.
