Black Strip Removed from Lady Justice’s Eyes: New Lady Justice Statue Unveiled in Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has just introduced a new representation of the Lady Justice statue, indicating a significant shift in its symbolism. Unlike the traditional depiction, which included a blindfold and a sword, the reimagined statue depicts Lady Justice without a blindfold and holding the Indian Constitution in one hand rather than a sword.

According to reports, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud commissioned this new design for the Supreme Court’s library. Legal experts view this move as a departure from the British colonial legacy. It embraces a vision of justice that treats all citizens fairly. The absence of the blindfold represents an open-eyed justice system. This ensures transparency and fairness for all. The Constitution represents that the judiciary administers justice according to constitutional laws rather than violence.

Chief Justice Chandrachud replaces the sword with the Constitution, reflecting the Indian judiciary’s evolving nature. This change emphasizes that the legal system delivers justice through legal frameworks rather than force. Roman mythology originated Lady Justice, known as Justitia, who symbolizes fairness and equality. The Greeks had a similar goddess called Dike.

This transformation has sparked discussion across legal circles, with many seeing it as a progressive step towards a more inclusive and transparent justice system.
