Sambalpur: Polythene Raid in Badabazar, Action Taken Against Violators, 3 Kg Polythene Seized
Sambalpur: The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) has continued its strict campaign against the use of banned polythene. Today, SMC officials raided several business establishments in the Badabazar area. During the raid, three kilograms of polythene were seized from several shops. The shopkeepers who used illegal polythene were warned and made aware of the regulations. According to an SMC official, any future violations will result in strict legal action.
Ongoing Action Since September
SMC initiated this crackdown on banned polythene in September. Recently, a raid was conducted in the Gobindtola area, where 24 kilograms of illegal polythene were seized. Additionally, a fine of ₹10,000 was collected from the shopkeepers involved. Prior to this, similar raids were conducted in two other locations in the city, where a total of 69 kilograms of polythene were confiscated, and ₹11,000 in fines were imposed on the violators.

Public Welcomes SMC’s Strict Actions
After a long period of silence, the SMC enforcement department has resumed operations, which has been well received by the public. It is worth noting that the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation was the first in the state to place strict restrictions on polythene use. In 2018, this law went into effect in the SMC area and received widespread praise. Eventually, the law was implemented throughout the entire state. Despite its early success in enforcing polythene restrictions, SMC had fallen behind in raids in recent years.
Now, with the crackdown back in action, polythene traders, who once feared frequent raids by SMC, are on alert again. At one point, the use of polythene was almost completely banned in the entire municipal area.
