Impact on Odisha During Cyclone Dana
The cyclone ‘Dana’ is approaching landfall and heavy rainfall is expected to have a greater impact on Odisha than strong winds. The districts of Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur may experience heavy rains. Additionally, Cuttack, Khordha, Dhenkanal, and Puri will experience heavy rain. Heavy rains and strong winds are expected to affect nearly 19 districts.
Cyclone ‘Dana’ Origin and Expected Path
Cyclone ‘Dana’ formed in the eastern-central Bay of Bengal and northern Andaman Sea. The storm is expected to affect the coast from Kendrapara to Balasore. Wind speeds are expected to range between 100 and 110 km/h as it approaches land, with gusts reaching 120 km/h on occasion. However, the main concern remains heavy rainfall in multiple regions. Cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall around midnight on the 24th and gradually weaken after that, reducing its intensity to around 30 km/h by the morning of the 25th.
Districts Most Affected
The cyclone will most likely affect nine districts in Odisha. In response, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has delegated authority to nine ministers to oversee the cyclone management efforts in these areas. Additionally, six senior IAS officers have been assigned specific responsibilities for managing the cyclone response in the six most affected districts. The district administration has been asked to fully cooperate with these efforts.

Preparedness for Cyclone Dana
Several districts, including Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendujhar, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Anugul, Khordha, Nayagarh, Cuttack, and Kendrapara, are expected to receive heavy rain and wind. The state and district administrations are well prepared, and the central government has promised to cooperate. The fire department, ODRAF, NDRF, the Coast Guard, the Navy, and the Air Force are all on high alert for any emergency.
Evacuations and Rescue Teams Deployed
In light of the cyclone’s expected impact, the state government has already evacuated around 10 lakh people to safer locations. As of now, 51 ODRAF teams, 178 fire service teams, and 20 NDRF teams have been deployed across 14 districts that are at risk. Additional rescue teams will be deployed as necessary.
Railways and Schools Shut Down
Due to the cyclone, the East Coast Railway has canceled 197 trains between today and the 25th. Schools, colleges, and universities in 14 districts have been closed to ensure students’ safety. Similipal National Park has also been closed for three days, and tourists should avoid Puri’s beaches during this time. The government has also urged fishermen to return from the sea, and coastal villages are closely monitored by the administration.
