Sambalpur: Paid Parking Introduced in Gole Bazaar to Tackle Congestion
Sambalpur’s Parking Problem
Sambalpur: Sambalpur faces a major challenge with a lack of designated parking spaces. This shortage forces people to park on the streets, which adds to the city’s congestion. Although there are now several malls in the city, not all have dedicated parking areas. Street vendors occupying roadside spaces make the situation even worse, escalating the parking crisis. Residents have long demanded a permanent solution to this problem, but it continues to persist.
New Paid Parking in Gole Bazaar
In response to this issue, the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation has decided to implement paid parking under the Gole Bazaar flyover. Starting tomorrow, anyone who parks here must pay a parking fee. The fee for two-wheelers is ten rupees; three-wheelers are thirty rupees; and four-wheelers are fifty rupees. Previously, parking in this location was free. The public has reacted to this move, questioning the decision to impose an additional financial burden on city residents.

Concerns Over Limited Parking at Malls
Several malls in the city still lack dedicated parking spaces, which leads visitors to park on nearby streets, often in violation of local parking regulations. While the authorities have taken limited action against some malls for these violations, the issue remains widespread. This lack of available parking at popular locations is a concern among residents, who are urging the Municipal Corporation to take stricter action.
Status of the Gole Bazaar Market Complex
Gole Bazaar is a significant business hub in Sambalpur. A few years ago, construction began on a multi-story market complex in this area, which included plans for a multi-level parking facility. The first floor of the complex was inaugurated last year, and around 25 shops have been allocated, but the complex is not yet fully operational. The parking facility within this complex has also not been made functional. Once this complex becomes fully operational, it could partially address the city’s parking problems. The Municipal Commissioner has been alerted to this ongoing issue, and further action is expected.
Challenges to Implementing Multi-Level Parking
Currently, multi-level parking solutions in Sambalpur are not possible, primarily due to high costs. The new Gole Bazaar market complex, which is expected to be functional within a month, will offer some relief by providing parking spaces. Residents hope this development will improve the city’s parking situation and reduce roadside congestion.
