Sambalpur: In Burla, a student became the victim of a cyber fraud after an online shopping experience turned into a nightmare. The incident highlights how even educated individuals, including students and teachers, are increasingly falling prey to cyber criminals, despite frequent awareness campaigns.
The Incident
A 20-year-old student pursuing a post-graduate course at Sambalpur University ordered some items from an online shopping site. After completing the payment for the products, the student waited for the delivery. However, the products did not arrive as expected.
Fraudster’s Call
During this waiting period, the student received a call from an unknown number. The person on the other end introduced themselves as a “Customer Service Representative” from the shopping site. The fraudster claimed that the student’s order had been canceled, but assured that a refund would be processed if the student paid a certain amount again online.

The Student’s Mistake
The student trusted the fraudster’s words and made the additional payment as instructed. The scammer continued to manipulate the student with various excuses, demanding more money at various stages. In total, the student ended up paying Rs. 15,000.
Realizing the Fraud
After making the final payment, the student realized they had been duped and were a victim of cyber fraud. The student, feeling duped, immediately filed a complaint with the Burla Police Station.
Ongoing Investigation
The police have registered a case and are now investigating the matter. Authorities are working to identify the scammer and prevent further incidents.
