Sambalpur: Excess Ashes Dumping Near SMC Office; Pollution Control Board Issues Notice

Sambalpur: Unauthorized and excessive soil dumping near the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) office has violated government directives and pollution control norms. The dumping, exceeding permitted levels and spreading onto public roads, has caused significant inconvenience to local residents. The Pollution Control Board has issued a notice to Hindalco, the company responsible, urging action against the involved transport agencies.

Land Purchased but Left Vacant

The plot near the SMC office was earlier developed by the Sambalpur Development Authority (SDA) and sold to various buyers. However, no construction occurred, leaving the land unused for years. Recently, SDA officials, including the SMC Commissioner, sought permission from the Pollution Control Board to level 29 decimals of this land.

Norms Violated During Soil Dumping

The Pollution Control Board initially granted permission based on its guidelines. However, during a recent inspection, the board’s representatives discovered severe noncompliance. They discovered an excessive amount of soil dumped in the area, completely filling the land rather than layering it, as required. Furthermore, the soil was being dumped extensively along the National Highway without board approval, which violated regulations.

Local Residents Suffer from Air Pollution

The excessive dumping has led to widespread air pollution in the surrounding areas, causing significant hardships for local residents. Despite repeated concerns, the situation remains unresolved, worsening living conditions for the community.

Pollution Control Board Takes Action

The Pollution Control Board has sent an official letter demanding the immediate removal of excess soil from the area. Additionally, further notices may be issued to the company if compliance is not ensured promptly. The board aims to address the pollution and restore order in the affected region.
