Sambalpur: Five Drinking Water Projects Stalled in Sambalpur; State Takes Action Against Contractors

Projects Delayed Beyond Deadlines

Sambalpur: Sambalpur, known for hosting the largest artificial reservoir in Asia, the Hirakud Dam, still faces acute drinking water shortages in many regions even six decades after the dam’s construction. The state government initiated five large-scale drinking water projects in the district six years ago. They awarded contracts and issued work orders. However, the contractors have failed to complete any of these projects despite passing their deadlines, leaving the projects stalled midway.

The state government has now taken action against the five companies responsible for these projects.

Statewide Situation: Many Projects Still Incomplete

Six years ago, Odisha launched 207 mega piped water projects across the state. However, out of these, only 16 projects have been completed so far. The construction of 191 projects is still ongoing, and the deadlines for 158 of them have already passed. Highlighting this issue, the state government shared this data in the Legislative Assembly, mentioning that action has been initiated against the defaulting companies.

Sambalpur’s Incomplete Projects

In Sambalpur district, five drinking water projects in areas such as Rairakhol, Jujumura, Maneswar, and Kuchinda remain unfinished. Renowned national-level companies were contracted to execute these projects. Yet, even after surpassing the stipulated timelines, these companies failed to complete the work. Consequently, the state government has revoked their financial guarantees and initiated measures to recover penalties.

Public Struggles Amidst Promises

Despite significant funds being allocated to Odisha under the central government’s Har Ghar Jal mission, these six-year-old plans remain incomplete, leaving large parts of the district without access to safe drinking water. The prolonged delays have caused immense hardship for residents, forcing many to struggle daily for drinking water.

In the Legislative Assembly, the concerned department minister confirmed these developments and assured that efforts are ongoing to address the situation urgently.
