Sambalpur: Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar’s Residence ‘Nika Apa Kutir’ Lies in Neglected Condition; Restoration Promises Remain Unfulfilled
Sambalpur: The house of Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar, the pioneer of Sambalpuri language, literature, and culture, is crumbling under neglect. Known as ‘Nika Apa Kutir,’ this iconic residence is in a dilapidated state. Every year, during the celebration of Guru Bohidar’s birth anniversary, people express their frustration at the condition of the house. Officials also make promises to restore it, but so far, no action has been taken.
Promises, But No Progress
Last August, Guru Bohidar’s family members visited the house to witness its condition. Overwhelmed with grief, they demanded immediate restoration. However, even after three months, the administration has remained silent. This inaction has sparked strong discontent among Sambalpuri language enthusiasts and cultural activists.
Dilapidated Condition of Nika Apa Kutir
Located in Ramji Gudi Pada, ‘Nika Apa Kutir’ is spread over six decimals of land. The roof has partially collapsed, walls are cracking, and wild plants have grown unchecked. Despite its historical and cultural significance, the structure remains neglected. Sambalpuri enthusiasts, who revere Guru Bohidar, feel disappointment over the lack of respect shown to his memory.
Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar’s Legacy
Guru Bohidar is celebrated as the face of Sambalpuri identity. His contributions to language and literature are unparalleled, yet his home stands as a stark reminder of administrative apathy. Sambalpuri language is spoken by over two crore people across Western Odisha, and state-level events like Sambalpuri drama competitions are held annually. However, the disregard for the preservation of his legacy has caused widespread frustration.

Community Demand for Action
Cultural leaders and residents are now demanding immediate restoration of ‘Nika Apa Kutir.’ They propose transforming the house into a memorial to honor Guru Bohidar’s contributions. A meeting held last year included discussions about renovating the property, but the promises have not materialized.
Tourism Department’s Response
The Director of the Tourism Department, Ravindra Kumar Dalai, stated that his department has not received any proposal regarding the restoration or memorialization of ‘Nika Apa Kutir.’ He assured that if someone submits a proposal, the department will forward it to the government and take necessary action.
A Call to Preserve Sambalpuri Heritage
Sambalpuri writer Dr. Satyanarayan Thakur expressed concern that people are forgetting the pioneers of the language while efforts are underway to include Sambalpuri in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. He criticized the lack of respect and effort to preserve the memory of Guru Bohidar, whose legacy shaped Sambalpuri identity.
Residents and cultural enthusiasts urge the administration to take swift action to restore ‘Nika Apa Kutir’ and ensure that the legacy of Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar is preserved for future generations.
