Sambalpur: Sambalpur Municipal Corporation to Construct 353 Sq. Km Drains by August; Master Plan and DPR for Drainage System Nearing Completion

Master Plan and DPR Preparation Underway

Sambalpur: Efforts are in progress to improve the management of Sambalpur city through the preparation of a master plan and a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The city’s Municipal Corporation aims to complete the DPR by July or August. Workers will construct 353 square kilometers of drains based on this plan. Surveyors have completed surveys in all 41 wards under the Municipal Corporation.

Officials will soon hold a meeting with the public and social organizations to discuss further action. Inspectors have already submitted their initial reports, and workers will start drain construction work in February, focusing on the lower areas of the city. The project will cost Rs. 2.46 crore, as stated by SMC Commissioner Vedbhushan.

Addressing Drainage Issues in Sambalpur

The city has been struggling with drainage problems for years. In August, an MoU was signed to prepare a drainage master plan to solve these issues. If implemented effectively, the project will address problems caused by waterlogging and backflow of rainwater. The master plan will include guidelines for constructing and maintaining all city drains.

Community Involvement and Surveys

During the DPR preparation, technical experts visited different wards, interacted with locals, and discussed their concerns. Senior citizens, NGOs, and other organizations have provided suggestions, which planners are incorporating into the plan. Surveyors are actively conducting survey activities to ensure they cover all areas.

Persistent Drainage Problems

Despite being recognized as a Municipal Corporation, Sambalpur city lacks adequate infrastructure. Key problems include the poor drainage system, which struggles to manage rainwater and domestic wastewater. Overflowing drains during rains and waterlogging in various parts of the city are common issues.

Even with existing drainage infrastructure spanning 548 kilometers and natural streams like Dhobijor, Haradjor, and Cheptipulia flowing through the city, these systems are inadequate for the growing urban population. The outdated drainage network cannot handle the city’s needs, leading to recurring complaints year-round.

Upcoming Solutions Welcomed by Residents

The new master plan is expected to modernize the drainage system and resolve longstanding issues. Residents and intellectuals have welcomed these efforts, hoping that the plan will bring much-needed relief and effective solutions to Sambalpur’s drainage woes.
