Sambalpur: Thelkoloi’s Dahi Bara Seller Falls Victim to Cyber Fraud; Loses Rs 94,000 After Calling Fake Flipkart Customer Care Number

Sambalpur: A dahi bara (street food) seller named Mithilesh Sa from Thelkoloi became a victim of cyber fraud and reported the incident to the Thelkoloi police. He had ordered a home theatre worth Rs. 2,500 from Flipkart but canceled the order as he was dissatisfied with the product. However, the company failed to collect the returned product or issue a refund for several days.

How the Scam Unfolded

Mithilesh was frustrated by the delay, so he looked up Flipkart’s customer service number on Google and called it. The person on the other end, pretending to be a company representative, assured Mithilesh that they had resolved the problem. During the conversation, the scammer skillfully obtained Mithilesh’s bank account information under the guise of processing a refund.

Loss of Money

Soon after Mithilesh shared his account details, the scammer withdrew Rs. 94,000 from his bank account. Mithilesh immediately approached the police to lodge a complaint after realizing that scammers had cheated him.

Cyber Criminals Exploiting Trust in Google

This incident highlights how cybercriminals exploit people’s trust in widely-used platforms like Google. They use fake customer care numbers to deceive users and steal their money. Many victims unknowingly fall into these traps, assuming the numbers they find online are legitimate.

Police Action

The Thelkoloi police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter. Authorities are working to trace the scammers and recover the stolen amount.
