Sambalpur: Modern Traffic Management to Start Soon in Sambalpur, Unsafe Vehicle Movement to be Controlled; Implementation After Financial Bid Approval

Sambalpur: Sambalpur residents can look forward to a safer and more organized traffic system. The city’s outdated manual traffic management system, reliant on stop signs held by traffic personnel, is set to be replaced. Soon, colorful traffic lights and a robust public information system will be installed at key locations to ensure smooth traffic flow and raise public awareness on various issues.

Progress on the Project

The project, which underwent initial tendering in January, has now reached the technical bid stage. Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner Vedbhushan has announced that the financial bids will open shortly. Once finalized, the project will kick off immediately.

Previously, four organizations participated in the technical bid process and proposed professional methods for effective traffic control. However, minor changes in the tendering process required the tenders to be re-invited. With this step now complete, the implementation is expected to move swiftly.

Key Features of the New System

The new system will include:

  1. Traffic Lights: Installed at all major intersections, replacing the manual system.
  2. CCTV Surveillance: Key areas will have enhanced monitoring to track and manage traffic violations and other activities.
  3. Signal Control: Automated signals will be operational at high-traffic and accident-prone areas.

Current Challenges in Traffic Management

Currently, Sambalpur’s traffic management heavily depends on manual efforts by traffic personnel and a few student volunteers. The old, defunct traffic signals are either uprooted or have dysfunctional lights. This lack of a modern system has made traffic control cumbersome and unsafe.

At major intersections like Ainthapali, Ainthapali Tali Chowk, Dhanupali, and Laxmi Talkies Chowk, traffic police struggle to manage the chaos. Residents and traffic personnel alike face significant issues due to these outdated systems.

Why the Change is Essential

As Sambalpur grows into a modern city, its old traffic management methods no longer suffice. A modern traffic system will not only streamline vehicle movement but also reduce accidents and improve road safety. Moreover, the inclusion of CCTV cameras will enhance crime monitoring, allowing authorities to maintain better law and order.

Positive Impact on the City

The introduction of modern traffic management will:

  • Improve Traffic Flow: Automated signals and better monitoring will reduce congestion.
  • Enhance Public Safety: Organized systems will lower the risk of accidents.
  • Support Law Enforcement: CCTV surveillance will help police monitor and control illegal activities effectively.

Local intellectuals have praised the project, highlighting its potential to transform Sambalpur into a safer and more efficient urban environment. With quick implementation after the financial bid, residents can expect these much-needed changes soon.
