Sambalpur: Kamli Bazar to Resume in Sambalpur; Weekly Market Will Return to its Permanent Location from New Year
Sambalpur: Sambalpur’s historic Kamli Bazar is set to resume operations at its permanent site starting January 2024. Known as one of the city’s oldest marketplaces, Kamli Bazar holds deep connections to the traditions, culture, and memories of Sambalpur’s residents.
The Return of Kamli Bazar
The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation Commissioner, Vedbhushan, announced that Kamli Bazar will reopen at its new permanent site in January. For the last two years, shopkeepers from this market have been operating from temporary locations at Ring Road and near Somnath Temple in Balibandha. The government’s Samalei Project, which aims to develop the surrounding area of Maa Samaleswari Temple, necessitated the relocation.
A Legacy That Dates Back Centuries
The history of Kamli Bazaar is tied to Sambalpur’s roots. During the mid-19th century, Sambalpur had no permanent marketplace. To solve this issue, in 1864, Alexander Bullerstrad Cumberland, the then British Deputy Commissioner, established a weekly market in front of Rani Bakhri. Kamli Bazar evolved into a bustling hub for trade and commerce over time.

A Hub for Essential Goods
Kamli Bazar became the go-to destination for middle-class and economically weaker families to purchase wedding essentials and household items. From wooden furniture like cots and cabinets to bamboo products like mats, baskets, and even handcrafted brooms, everything was available here. It also attracted buyers from neighboring districts such as Sundargarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, and even nearby Chhattisgarh.
A Marketplace for Generations
For over 3-4 generations, traders from Sambalpur and nearby areas have used Kamli Bazar as their business center. The market not only catered to local needs but also served as a cultural melting pot. However, after it was shifted from its original location near Patneswari Temple, many traders stopped coming.
The decision to re-establish Kamli Bazar at its original site has renewed hope and excitement among the people. Traders and shoppers alike are eager to revive the vibrant spirit of this historic marketplace.
A Warm Welcome Awaits
As Kamli Bazar gears up to reopen in its permanent location, the city of Sambalpur is preparing to welcome it back with open arms. The iconic market’s return will restore its former glory and strengthen its cultural and economic significance in the region.
