Sambalpur: Tourist Crowds Gathering at Hirakud Reservoir; Allegations of Overcharging Parking Fees in Violation of Rules, Discontent Among Visitors Grows
Growing Tourist Rush at Hirakud
Sambalpur: Hirakud Reservoir in Burla is witnessing a daily influx of tourists, with crowds swelling significantly on Sundays. Today, over 15,000 tourists gathered at the site to enjoy the serene natural beauty and indulge in picnics. Visitors from Odisha and neighboring states flocked to the spot, eager to experience its scenic charm.
Parking Fee Sparks Discontent
However, complaints about high parking fees have marred the experience for many tourists. The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) recently introduced a parking fee collection system, awarding the tender to a private agency named “Maa Jhankarani Services.” This system, which started a few days ago, has been accused of overcharging visitors.
For instance, heavy vehicles and buses are supposed to pay Rs. 500 as per the official rate, but the agency reportedly collects Rs. 1,200 instead. Similarly, four-wheelers are being charged between Rs. 200 and Rs. 300. Mobile receipts for these transactions have gone viral, sparking widespread criticism.

Lack of Basic Amenities
The lack of proper facilities, such as restrooms or lodging arrangements, further adds to tourists’ dissatisfaction. Despite paying hefty fees, visitors face difficulties during their stay. Many picnickers expressed frustration over these issues, especially as the state government emphasizes tourism development.
Traffic Chaos and Long Waits
The heavy influx of visitors coupled with the parking fee collection system led to severe traffic jams today. Vehicles were stuck for hours, causing significant inconvenience to tourists.
Calls for Immediate Action
The ongoing controversy over parking fees and poor infrastructure has sparked intense discussions. Many demand urgent intervention from authorities to address these issues. Visitors hope the government will take steps to improve facilities and regulate parking charges to ensure a better experience for tourists in the future.
