Sambalpur: Student Critically Injured in Bike Accident in front of Women’s College; Agitated Students Block Road Demanding Safety Measures

Incident Details

Sambalpur: A serious road accident took place in front of Sambalpur Women’s College. A first-year student, Nikita Luha, from the Arts and Humanities department, sustained critical injuries. A speeding bike hit her while she was crossing the road. The bike rider also suffered serious injuries.

Student Protest

Following the accident, angry students blocked the road in front of the college, demanding better safety measures. They insisted on the construction of a new road, speed breakers, and a zebra crossing in front of the college. They also pointed out the absence of proper signboards and security guards, which increased the risk of accidents.

Administration’s Response

College authorities and the Sadar Tahsildar arrived at the scene and persuaded the students to end the protest after assuring them that their demands would be addressed.

Lack of Safety Measures

Despite a newly constructed road near the college, the absence of speed breakers and zebra crossings continues to pose a threat. No signboard indicating a college zone has been installed yet, and no security guard has been deployed for student safety.

Another Fatal Accident

In a separate incident, a biker named Jagmohan Mahananda from Bargarh district died in a collision near Tumbesingha Overbridge late last night. His bike ran out of fuel, and while he was moving the bike to the roadside, an unknown vehicle struck him, causing his death on the spot.

Police Action

The Sadar SDPO confirmed the details of the second accident and mentioned that police have registered a case for further investigation.

Threat to Protestors

During the college protest, students demanded compensation for the injured student and refused to end their demonstration. The Dhanupali and Khetrajpur police officers arrived and tried to manage the situation. However, the Khetrajpur police officer allegedly threatened the protesting students with legal action if they did not disperse immediately. No official response from the police regarding this allegation has been released yet.
