Sambalpur: School Children’s Lives at Risk; Private Schools Ignoring Guidelines, Lack of Monitoring Raises Concerns

Lack of Regular Safety Inspections

Sambalpur: Despite strict guidelines for student transportation, no one is monitoring their implementation. Schools and transport authorities are not enforcing the rules, putting students’ lives in danger. Every day, children travel in overcrowded autos, buses, and vans, with some even hanging from the sides.

Private Schools Ignoring Safety Rules

Many private schools in Sambalpur transport over 10,000 students daily. However, they do not follow proper safety measures. Autos and small vans carry children without security checks, while school buses often exceed speed limits. Some mini-vans have open doors and loose tarpaulins, creating serious risks. Concerned parents are questioning who will be responsible if an accident happens.

Overloaded and Unsafe Vehicles

Rules clearly state that only authorized vehicles can transport students, and they should not carry more children than the seat limit. Standing or overcrowded travel is prohibited. Additionally, school buses must display school contact details, have drivers with at least five years of experience, and be equipped with first-aid kits and fire extinguishers. However, these rules are often ignored in Sambalpur.

Widespread Use of Three-Wheelers for Student Transport

Although three-wheelers are not meant for school transport, they are commonly used in the city. Many drivers even seat children next to them in highly unsafe positions. Despite occasional crackdowns, violations continue. According to Regional Transport Officer Ramdas Tudu, action is taken whenever violations are reported, and schools that break the rules face consequences.

Parents and residents are now demanding stricter enforcement of transport rules to ensure children’s safety.
