Sambalpur: Streets Turn into Cattle Sheds; Sambalpur Residents Distressed by Stray Cattle Menace, Questions Raised About SMC’s Inaction

Cattle Roam Freely, Blocking Roads
Sambalpur: In Sambalpur, stray cows and bulls are wandering across main roads and narrow lanes, creating major traffic issues. In the evening, the number of stray cattle increases, making commuting even more difficult. As a result, accidents are happening frequently.
Cattle Occupy Streets, Causing Traffic Jams
In areas like Gopalmal, Fatak, and Mudipada, cows and bulls are lying on the roads, blocking traffic. This situation is making it harder for people to travel, especially in the evening. Roads remain congested, and people often have to wait for long periods due to cattle blocking the way.
Negligence by Cattle Owners
Many cattle owners are no longer keeping their cows in sheds. Instead, they let them roam freely on the streets. Due to a lack of food, these animals are scavenging in garbage dumps, consuming plastic and other harmful waste, which poses a serious health risk to them.

Earlier, cattle owners used to build proper sheds for their cows, but now they are constructing houses in those spaces and releasing their animals onto the streets. This carelessness is putting both humans and cattle at risk of accidents.
No Action Taken by Authorities
Despite the growing problem, Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) has not taken any strict action against irresponsible cattle owners. Local resident Priyadarshini Nayak mentioned that traveling in the evening has become extremely difficult due to stray cattle crowding the roads. She added that traffic congestion has become so severe that people often have to wait for more than 30 minutes in one spot.
Lack of Control Measures
Previously, authorities used to attach reflective radium strips to stray cattle for visibility and relocate them to shelters. However, all these measures have now stopped.
The SMC Commissioner, Vedbhushan, has been informed about the issue. In response, two cattle shelters have been identified, and rescued cows are being moved there. The authorities are also working to identify more such stray cattle and relocate them to designated areas.
