Sambalpur: VSSUT Takes Strict Action After Student’s Death in Power Channel; Declares 7 Hazardous Spots as Restricted Areas for Students

Student Drowns in Power Channel

Sambalpur: The authorities of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) have taken strict measures following the tragic drowning of a 19-year-old student, Priyanshu Prakash Behera. The university has now banned students from visiting seven dangerous locations around Burla city. A notice has been issued on the university’s board, warning that strict action will be taken against any student who violates this rule.

Recurring Drowning Incidents Raise Concern

Over the years, several engineering students have drowned in water bodies near Burla. On March 13, Priyanshu, a first-year Civil Engineering student, had gone to the Power Channel’s 18,000 Ghat near the Hirakud Dam with his friends for a bath. Unfortunately, he drowned and lost his life. Previously, in April 2022, another student had drowned at the same spot. These repeated incidents have deeply concerned the university authorities.

University Declares Seven Locations as Prohibited Areas

Following the latest tragedy, VSSUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Deepak Sahu chaired a review meeting, during which the committee identified several highly dangerous spots for students, including Power Channel, 18,000 Ghat at Power Channel, Right Dyke, Jhankarani Temple Area, Fishery Point, Syphon Spillway, and Mahanadi Riverbank. As a result, the university has officially declared these locations as restricted areas for students. Authorities strongly advise students to stay away from these places to prevent further tragedies.
