Sambalpur: Encroachment Removal Drive Resumes in Sambalpur; Many Shops and Houses Demolished, New Vegetable Market to be Established in Sahu Colony

Eviction Drive Resumes

Sambalpur: The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) resumed its anti-encroachment drive today, targeting illegal constructions in Sahu Colony, Mudipada, and Kumbharpada. Authorities demolished several shops and homes that were built on encroached land.

Public Anger over Selective Action

In Mudipada, SMC demolished a club and a two-storied house near the Sparsh Nursing Home, which were built over a drain and had taken over public roads. However, locals expressed displeasure that some large buildings and clubs were spared, accusing officials of biased action.

Relocation Plan for Street Vendors

SMC announced it will relocate street food vendors from in front of the fire station to a new market in Sahu Colony. As part of this plan, officials demolished five roadside huts and plan to remove three more. Earlier, the colony residents were notified about the evictions, and some families vacated voluntarily.

Shops Demolished in Phases

In Kumbharpada, SMC demolished four shops, while in Mudipada, seven shops were taken down. Two shopkeepers had already vacated their premises following repeated notices. SMC removed the remaining structures forcibly.

New Market Setup Underway

Officials stated that the area near the Ramsagar pond has been selected for the new market. Electricity supply arrangements will be made soon to support vending operations.

Unlawful Activities Targeted

During today’s demolition, SMC particularly targeted houses involved in illegal activities. However, locals protested that a club built over a drain was spared.

SMC Assures Impartial Action

Enforcement Officer Sushanta Sahu assured that no favoritism would be shown. He confirmed that the club built over the drain would definitely be demolished and that the Tehsildar would soon mark the boundaries of a two-storied building for further action.
