Sambalpur: Demand for Rs. 15,000 for Matriculation Certificate; Parents Helpless Due to Illegal Demand by School Authorities

Student Asked to Pay Rs. 15,000 for Certificate
Sambalpur: A private school allegedly demanded Rs. 15,000 from a student to issue her matriculation certificate. The school authorities clearly stated that the certificate would not be given unless the full amount was paid. As a result, the student’s parents were forced to pay Rs. 6,000 online. However, the school still refused to issue the certificate, saying the remaining Rs. 9,000 must be paid first.
Family Approaches District Education Officer
Facing this situation, the girl and her parents approached the District Education Officer (DEO) today to lodge a formal complaint. According to the complaint, the girl daughter of Dineshwar Meher from Kanijuri village under Khetrajpur police limits studied in a private school. She passed the matric exam with 58% marks. But when they asked for the certificate, the school demanded Rs. 15,000.

No Pending Fees, Claims Father
Dineshwar stated that all school fees had already been cleared before the examination. He also confirmed that Rs. 6,000 was paid online, yet the school continued to withhold the certificate. Since there was no valid reason to charge extra, he brought the matter to the DEO’s attention.
Education Officer Promises Action
After receiving the complaint, District Education Officer Lakshman Bhoi responded that there is no official rule allowing schools to charge any fee for issuing certificates. He assured that his office would contact the school authorities, investigate the basis of the demand, and take appropriate action.
