Dhanteras: A Festival of Wealth and Prosperity, We Online Sambalpur Team Wish All a Happy Dhanteras!
Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. This auspicious day falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik.
The word “Dhan” means wealth, and “Teras” refers to the thirteenth day. According to Hindu mythology, on this day, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean during the churning of the cosmic milk (Samudra Manthan). Another significant legend tells the story of King Hima’s sixteen-year-old son. It was prophesied that he would die by snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. However, his clever wife laid out her ornaments and gold coins at the entrance and lit lamps. When Yama, the god of death, arrived as a serpent, he was blinded by the dazzling lights and metal, thus saving the prince’s life.

On Dhanteras, people consider it highly auspicious to purchase gold, silver, or kitchen utensils. Many also worship Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and well-being, who also emerged during Samudra Manthan.
