Sambalpur: Abandoned Private Bus Stand to be Revamped; Sambalpur to See New 5-Storey Building

100 Businesses to Benefit
Government Offices Will Also Operate

Sambalpur: A significant transformation is underway in Sambalpur, with the old private bus stand near the city’s swimming pool set to be replaced by a modern 5-story complex. The Western Odisha Development Council (WODC) is in charge of this massive redevelopment project. Despite an initial investment of ₹50 lakh, construction was halted after making some progress.

Current Situation at the Old Bus Stand

The old bus stand, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Sambalpur Development Authority (SDA), covers 1.14 acres. Although several shop stalls were built on this plot, it has become increasingly neglected. Over time, the site has deteriorated, and due to the raised road levels, rainwater accumulates during the monsoon season, making the area an unsanitary zone.

This situation has made it impossible for shopkeepers to continue doing business. As a result, one by one, the shops have closed, leaving only dilapidated and unsafe structures. Because of the stagnant water, the low-lying area has become a haven for anti-social behavior, as well as a breeding ground for mosquitos.

Abandoned Construction and Future Plans

The WODC had started some work on the site by erecting open sheds and utilizing iron beams. However, the project was not completed, and weeds have overgrown the area, giving it the appearance of a small pond. Despite spending ₹50 lakh on construction from 2018 to 2021, the project was abruptly halted.

Despite the SDA owning 1.14 acres of prime land, the WODC halted construction due to a lack of space for fire trucks to navigate the area. A new plan is being developed to build a 5-story commercial complex on this site.

A New Dawn for Businesses

When the new modern building is finished, it is expected to generate significant commercial interest. According to officials, the new complex will house not only businesses but also government offices. This modern infrastructure will benefit at least 100 local business owners, opening up new avenues for expansion and development.

The SDA intends to complete the Detailed Project Report (DPR) soon, and the proposed building is expected to become a business hub for both entrepreneurs and customers.

Government Involvement and Safety Concerns

Shopkeepers expressed concern to the SDA about the area’s deterioration and safety hazards. As a result, the health department declared the old shop stalls unsafe, and all businesses in the area have shut down.

In response to the urgent need for redevelopment, SDA Secretary Ajay Tiwari assured that the new plan is currently being considered. While specific details are not yet available, the DPR is expected to be finalized soon, signaling the beginning of a new era for the site.
