Bahanaga train accident: Cormandal climbs on Bengaluru-Howrah Express; 207 dead, 900 serious
17 coaches overturned, rescue operation continued all night, Chief Minister and Railway Minister will come today
Baleshwar / Bhadrak / Tire / Bahanga: A terrible train accident took place at Bahanga railway station Panpana, 22 km from Baleswar, at around 7 pm on Friday. Shortly after two coaches of the Bengaluru-to-Howrah superfast train derailed, 17 coaches overturned after the Cormandal Express from Howrah ran over it. So far 207 passengers have lost their lives and more than 900 have been injured. A large number of passengers are still trapped in the train carriage and the death toll is expected to rise to 250 as rescue operations continue. While the local people rescued many people, the district administration and the railway department have intensified the rescue operation. Two express trains and a freight train were also involved in the accident. The President, Prime Minister, and Chief Minister expressed their condolences. Railway Minister has announced Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50 thousand to the minor injured.
According to the information received, 2 coaches of the Superfast train (No. 12864) going from Bengaluru to Howrah on the downline derailed near Bahanga Station North Cabin. Meanwhile, the Shalimar Howada-Chennai Cormandal Superfast Express (Train No. 12841) coming on the upline collided with it and ran over it. At the scene, 5 bogies of the Karamandal train completely overturned, while more than 14 bogies fell off the line and climbed onto the Yashwantpur train bogies on the adjacent track. In the accident, hundreds of passengers were trapped in the carriage, while 120 passengers were rescued, DG of Fire Department Sudshanshu Shadangi informed.
