Sambalpur: Bird Census to Begin in Hirakud from January 18; Unique Bird Species Arrive from Europe and America for the First Time

Sambalpur: Bird counting will begin in Hirakud from January 18. This year, for the first time, birds from Europe and America have been spotted in the 700-square-kilometer wetland area. Species such as Eurasian Wigeon, Mallard, Great Crested Grebe, Terns, Bar-headed Goose, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Lesser Scaup, Sandpiper, and Northern Pintail are among the migratory birds visiting Hirakud. Remarkably, the Ruff, which was not observed last year, has also been sighted this season. Additionally, large flocks of gulls and ducks have arrived, according to Hirakud Wildlife Division officials.

Comprehensive Preparations for Bird Counting

The Hirakud Wildlife Division has made extensive arrangements for the upcoming bird census. Divided into different teams, the census will take place from 6 AM to 5 PM. Experts, forest staff, and local bird enthusiasts will participate in the operation. The counting will cover the 700-square-kilometer area from Chhattisgarh’s border to Hirakud and the Power Channel region.

Advanced Tools for Accurate Data

Teams will use modern cameras and GPS devices on boats to track and record bird populations precisely. This year’s preparations aim to set a benchmark in accuracy and detail.

Rising Trends in Bird Numbers

Over the years, the number of birds visiting Hirakud has steadily increased.

  • 2021: 1.24 lakh birds from 98 species visited.
  • 2022: Numbers rose to 2.08 lakh birds from 104 species.
  • 2023: A record 3.16 lakh birds from 108 species were observed.
  • 2024: 3.42 lakh birds from 112 species visited, marking the highest so far.

This year, officials expect the count to surpass the previous records, considering the favorable conditions and increasing migratory patterns.

Ideal Climate for Migratory Birds

Hirakud offers an ideal environment for migratory birds due to its mild daytime temperatures (20°C to 26°C) and cooler nights (around 10°C). Moreover, the abundant food supply in the region attracts a higher number of birds each year.

Seasonal Window for Migratory Birds

The birds typically arrive in Hirakud between mid-November and early March. This season, the favorable climate and food availability have further contributed to the growth in bird populations.

With rising numbers of bird species and advanced census preparations, Hirakud continues to emerge as a significant habitat for migratory birds. The January 18 census will likely set a new milestone in documenting avian diversity in the region.
