Sambalpur: Bus Shelters in Poor Condition; No Signboards or Stop Information, Passengers Left Struggling

Sambalpur: Despite being recognized as a Municipal Corporation, Sambalpur still faces a number of infrastructure issues. Many development plans have been proposed, but their implementation is stalled due to a lack of political will. One of the major issues is the state of passenger bus shelters.

Mo Bus Service Starts but Facilities Lag Behind

Though the “Mo Bus” service was introduced in Sambalpur to improve local transportation, it appears that authorities have forgotten about passenger convenience. There are still no information boards indicating where bus stops are located in the city. Furthermore, there are very few passenger shelters built for people waiting for buses, leaving them without basic necessities. Despite the fact that the Mo Bus service has been in operation for more than four months, no visible improvement has occurred.

Public Reaction and Inconvenience

Passengers are frustrated. Even though the Municipal Corporation has taken steps to provide bus service between Sambalpur, Burla, and Hirakud, people still don’t know where the stops are. As a result, passengers from outside the city, as well as locals, are unsure where to wait for the bus. Due to the lack of adequate shelters, commuters are forced to wait on the streets, where they are exposed to harsh weather conditions such as sun and rain, causing considerable discomfort.

Existing Bus Shelters in Ruins

The city’s few remaining bus shelters are in terrible condition. Many have broken roofs, and others are so full of garbage that passengers are hesitant to use them. The Municipal Corporation has also failed to take any action to maintain these old shelters. When the issue was brought to the attention of the Municipal Commissioner, Vedabhushan, the organization in charge of the Mo Bus service promised to build new bus shelters as soon as possible.

While the bus service is a welcome initiative, the public is dissatisfied because it does not address these passenger needs. They hope that the promised improvements will be implemented soon to improve the overall commuting experience in the city.
