Sambalpur: City Parks to Get a New Lease on Life; Sambalpur Parks to Be Maintained by Social Organizations
Sambalpur: Various parks in Sambalpur city are falling into disrepair due to a lack of proper maintenance. The Municipal Corporation had built several facilities like children’s parks, open-air gyms, and playgrounds in different localities. However, despite spending lakhs of rupees on these constructions, many of these facilities are either being stolen or damaged in a short period of time. When some equipment breaks, it is not repaired, leading to further neglect. Often, these projects appear to benefit only the contractors, while the parks lose their charm and purpose over time.
In the past, many parks in Sambalpur have become neglected due to the lack of care. One such example is the Satyanarayan Bohidar Park, built near the Board Office a few years ago. Initially, the park’s plants dried up and died, and eventually, the entire park fell into ruin. The play equipment was stolen, and now, only the park’s name remains. Last year, a statue of Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar was installed, and fencing was done around the park. Despite these efforts, the parks need more attention.

New Management Plan for Parks
To address this issue, Sambalpur Municipal Commissioner Bedabhushan has announced that the management of these parks will be handed over to social organizations. These organizations will be responsible for ensuring the parks’ upkeep. For example, the newly built Chandrasekhar Park in Khetrajpur has been entrusted to the Marwari Yuva Manch for its maintenance.
Moreover, several newly constructed parks have been handed over to self-help groups. The municipal corporation has revised its budget for park maintenance. Depending on the size and environment of the parks, suitable organizations will be identified and entrusted with their management. Interested organizations are invited to apply for this responsibility, particularly those affiliated with temples and sports groups.
Steps for Park Restoration
In addition, the corporation is working to restore neglected parks. For example, Gandhi Park is currently being renovated, and its management has been delegated to an organization. This process will continue to ensure that other parks in the city are also well-maintained. If these efforts are successful, the current lack of recreational spaces in Sambalpur could be addressed, providing much-needed relief to the community.
