Sambalpur: Cleaning of 4 Drains in the City; When will it be Completed?

There’s a plan to clean 4 drains in a city. The Water Resources Department promised to create water channels. In a review meeting with a minister, officials had asked for a week’s time. However, the work hasn’t started yet. The question is raised: When will this work be completed?

Sambalpur: The city’s major four drains are prone to causing flooding, so they must be cleaned before the monsoon arrives. However, despite a review meeting led by Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Minister Rabi Narayan Naik five days ago, during which officials requested a week’s time, work has yet to begin. Contractors have been assigned the job but have yet to begin, prompting concerns that the city will face flood conditions due to heavy rains.

The Chepati Puliya Haradjoar drain is completely clogged, with most areas filled with sediment. It’s been a while since the last cleaning, and no one knows when it’ll be completed. Despite contractors having been assigned the work, there has been no sign of progress, raising concerns about artificial flooding in the city.

A few years ago, the areas surrounding these drains, including Budi Anchal Pada, Mudipada Tali Anchal, Bhangamunda, Talipada, Uparpada, Housing Board Colony, and Hirakud Colony, were submerged. As a result, during his review meeting, Minister Naik directed the irrigation department to clean the drains immediately, emphasizing the importance of taking prompt action. However, the officials’ silence and the contractors’ negligence have slowed progress.

The Irrigation Department is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the city’s four major drains. Sambalpur Municipal Corporation cleans smaller drains. However, work has yet to begin, raising concerns. According to complaints, even light rain can cause waterlogging in the city. The Irrigation Department still needs to respond to these concerns.
