Sambalpur: Controversy Over Paid Parking in No-Parking Zone at Sambalpur Railway Station

Controversy erupts in Sambalpur as paid parking operates in a no-parking zone near the railway station. Learn about unauthorized parking, contractor involvement, public confusion, and demands for action in this ongoing issue.

Sambalpur: Unauthorized parking spaces can be found all over Sambalpur, contributing to ongoing traffic problems. However, in Sambalpur, independent parking lots are being established illegally, and money is being collected for their use. A new issue has emerged in which unauthorized parking spaces are leased to contractors, who then charge people to park. This has been observed near the Sambalpur railway station, causing dissatisfaction among many groups. A contractor has taken over the ramp area leading to the station and blocked off one side of the road for parking. This area was previously designated as a no-parking zone but is now being used for four-wheeler parking. Despite a “No Parking” signboard outside, the area is being used for paid parking, disregarding the sign entirely.

Poor Treatment of People

First, unauthorized parking lots have been established. If you park there, a fine of Rs 500 is imposed, as indicated by a signboard. However, the contractor has converted the area into a pay parking zone. According to one official, the railway department has leased the expanded area to the contractor. It is unclear who authorized the contractor to use the no-parking area because no departmental response has been received. Furthermore, anyone who disputes this is mistreated by the contractor’s employees. People who park their vehicles there are charged the full parking fee. This situation has created confusion among the public, who believe it is unfair to pay a Rs 500 fine outside while also being charged for parking inside. There is a general demand for action to address this issue while keeping the public’s interests in mind.
