Cybercriminals Steal Rs. 36 Crore in Six Months: 1930 Helpline Advises to Avoid Cyber Fraud
Cybercriminals are everywhere online. They stole ₹36 crore over six months. According to police, this money was stolen between January and June.
The state is experiencing an increase in cyber fraud. Every day, cybercriminals devise new ways to exploit people. They use phone calls, SMS, and WhatsApp to provide enticing deals. Lotteries, cars, and easy loans are among the available options. Common people are the primary targets. Some people avoid these scams, while others become victims and lose everything. Victims come to the cyber police station after being defrauded.
Between January and June 2024, Bhubaneswar received 2,394 cybercrime reports. A total of 110 cases were registered. Cybercriminals stole ₹36 crore in these cases.

During investigations, ₹9.5 crore was frozen in multiple accounts. Victims recovered ₹46 lakh. The majority of cybercrime cases involved UPI fraud, social media scams, parcel fraud, and SIM KYC message scams.
The Commissionerate Police have arrested 23 cybercriminals thus far. Five of them are interstate fraudsters.
With an increase in digital arrests, more fraud cases are being reported. Investment fraud is also a popular scam. To avoid falling victim to such scams, the Commissionerate Police advises the public to call the 1930 helpline.
