Sambalpur: Excavation Work Begins Near Chaunrpur Bridge for Mahanadi Riverfront Project; Soil Testing Process Also Underway

Chaunrpur Bridge Site Identified for Initial Work

Sambalpur: Authorities have initiated excavation work near the Chaunrpur Bridge in Sambalpur as part of the Mahanadi Riverfront Project. The Irrigation Department has begun soil testing at the site to prepare for the development. Chief Minister announced the project on September 10 during the Nuakhai festival.

Financial Support and Project Goals

The Union Tourism Ministry has allocated Rs. 100 crore for developing eco-tourism in the Hirakud dam area. The project aims to transform the Hirakud reservoir and its surroundings into a major tourist destination, preserving the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. The goal is to offer an enriching experience for visitors by focusing on eco-friendly development and improving facilities.

Proposed Features of the Project

The riverfront will feature modern amenities like laser shows, wellness centers, sea planes, and cruise services. The Tourism Department has prioritized developing attractive accommodations and recreational facilities to enhance the overall appeal of the area.

Land Identification Process Underway

The Sub-Collector Pushpanjali Panda mentioned that officials are conducting surveys to identify government and private land along the Mahanadi’s banks. They will leverage the scenic geography of the riverfront to attract tourists. The government will undertake land acquisition where necessary, and the Irrigation and Revenue departments are actively working on the process.

Master Plan in Progress

Tourism Department Deputy Director Rabindra Dalei shared plans to build cafeterias, parking spaces, and gardens under the Mahanadi Riverfront Project. A master plan is being prepared, and the Revenue Department has been tasked with providing detailed information and identifying required land.

Next Steps and Timeline

The project is currently in its initial stages. Officials stated that preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and other specifics will take additional time. Further updates will follow as groundwork progresses.
