Sambalpur: Fire Incident at Lakhmi Talkies; Fire Brigade’s Prompt Response Prevents Major Disaster

Sambalpur: A fire broke out at the abandoned Lakhmi Talkies on Wednesday. The fire started in the morning due to garbage igniting inside the vacant building. The fire brigade from Sambalpur quickly arrived at the scene and managed to control the fire after about an hour of effort. The prompt response from the fire brigade helped prevent a major disaster.

Lakhmi Talkies, once a landmark and a hub for cinema lovers in Sambalpur, is now lying in an abandoned state. The building is almost entirely in ruins. After Wednesday’s fire, the interior has been completely destroyed. Lakhmi Talkies, which once echoed with applause for actors and actresses, now stand deserted. During a time when televisions were scarce, Lakhmi Talkies provided entertainment to many, but now it is in a state of disrepair.

Established after India’s independence, Lakhmi Talkies was once renowned across Odisha. However, it failed to keep up with rapidly changing technology and eventually closed down. Besides Lakhmi Talkies, other well-known cinemas in Sambalpur, such as Ashoka Talkies and Gaiety Talkies, have also faded into history and are now known only by the landmarks named after them.
