Sambalpur: Flyover Construction Begins at Ainthapali, Displacement Notices Issued
Construction begins on Sambalpur’s 3km Ainthapali flyover, aimed at reducing accidents and traffic congestion. The project faces challenges with resident evictions and design changes.
Commencement of Construction, Eviction Notices and Public Dissatisfaction
Sambalpur: Construction has begun on the long-awaited flyover at Ainthapali, the main entrance to the accident-prone Sambalpur city. Along with this, many families living on government land in the nearby Anuguliapada area have been ordered to leave their homes. This eviction notice has caused dissatisfaction among the poor residents, who are concerned about where they will go, particularly during the rainy season. They demand that the government provide them with the promised four decimal plots before proceeding with the eviction.
Flyover Design and Specifications
According to reports, the Ainthapali flyover will be 3 km long. It will be built on National Highway 53 from the Ainthapali Busstand. The new design includes a six-lane flyover and an eight-lane road underneath. Vehicles traveling on State Highway 10 towards Jharsuguda will use the road beneath the flyover, while those heading towards Anugul, Cuttack, and Deogarh will use the upper road. This will not only alleviate traffic congestion but will also make commuting easier.

Addressing Traffic Issues, Initial Proposal and Design Changes, Project Approval and Cost
Construction flaws cause frequent accidents at the intersections of National Highway 53 and State Highway 10 (Sahid Birsa Munda Chowk and two other intersections). The proposed flyover would begin at the new bus stand and extend to Ambiranagar on State Highway 10 and Anuguliapada on National Highway 53. However, the authorities deemed this design inadequate, and the central government requested a new design. After government approval, a tender was issued. The project, valued at 300 crore rupees, was awarded to a company that bid significantly lower than the projected cost.
Future Benefits and Community Support
Once completed, the flyover is expected to provide a permanent solution to traffic congestion, ensuring residents’ safety and convenience. It will also add to the appeal and beauty of Sambalpur’s main entrance. Various city organizations have long advocated for the construction of this flyover in the accident-prone Ainthapali area.
